Sound Stage Certified
When we set out in our mission to build the new studio, we knew we had to do our research. From experience that told us that a stage over 10×10 metres was a little overkill (and wouldn’t return enough revenue vs. investment and running costs) and that anything smaller than that was too small to be flexible.
Hence our studio has a 10×10m infinity cove (which can be enclosed within a set of acoustic stage curtains) in a 10×15m soundproofed room. We also have a massive backlot, loads of parking and all the other facilities you could possibly want at a studio and postproduction facility.
But for me, sound was essential, why would anyone want to travel to a studio which could only be used for visuals. What about the 70% of our work in which people actually speak?
So we had the room tested for sound continuity and response rates. In order to achieve a smooth and uniform reverberation decay contour throughout the room; we used a highly experienced sound consultant in designing the acoustic treatment. We knew that a particularly smooth and controlled acoustic environment would be a dream to work with in production and postproduction.
We did this early on in development to save us ‘guessing’ what to soundproof and how. Since then the room has taken an amazing shape and not only has a really clear sound, it also retains an element of vibrancy which brings voices to life.
We’ve now shot a number of projects on the cove which involve sound and it has been a smooth ride.
